The bridge at Great Bridge spans the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, which was constructed between 1850 and 1859. Mr. Buyrn's photos above show the old bridge. It was constructed in 1943 and was "a 280-foot, low-level, double swing, two-lane bridge" The photos below show the removal of the old bridge and its new replacement, which was completed in 2004. The new structure is "a 5-lane, fast-acting, two-leaf bascule bridge." (Army Corps of Engineers fact sheet).
